Carl Friedman, a writer from Amsterdam (and also a woman, regardless of the name Carl), was born in 1952 and is the daughter of Holocaust survivors. In 1994, Persea Books published the translation of her novel Nightfather, which achieved immense critical acclaim. Now out from Persea are two more of Friedman's books, The Gray Lover, in hard cover, and The Shovel and The Loom, in paperback. Like Nightfather, both of her new books are under 200 pages, and both pack a wallop of emotion, thought and beauty into their few but powerful pages.
